MKP Bus and Trams
|
 |

Krakow’s old town easily
lends itself to pleasant strolling with almost all of the old town's attractions
within a 15 minute walk of the
Main
Square.
The square and roads immediately around it being
pedestrianised with the exception of horse drawn carriages, small electric
vehicles, City Services and the odd film or television crew.
However the city has a comprehensive safe and clean public
transit system of buses and trams provided by the MPK network for those times
when you want to journey further away from the centre and what is more they
provide an impressive sightseeing tour of greater Krakow.
The services, which loop around the outskirts of the old town,
have several major bus/tram interchanges on the roads that border the Planty including
the Teatr Bagatela, which is a few minutes walk from Krupnicza 247 and provides
direct links to many of
Krakow’s Museums and
out of centre shopping arcades.
The busiest time on the network appears to be the morning
rush hour, so it’s best to avoid travelling between 7am and 8am if possible. In
the afternoon the network can be busy from 2pm to 5pm. While daytime services run
from 5am until 11pm at night, during the 6 hours that the daytime service doesn’t run,
night buses offer hourly services on the major routes.
As a rule the buses and trams in Krakow
are safe, clean and efficient but as everywhere dont give opportunites
to pickpockets. |

Tickets and Passes
|
 |
 |
 |
 | | |
Tickets are readily available from most of the newsagent
like street kiosks found throughout the city as well as the handful of MPK
ticket offices. Look for the sign “sprzedaz biletów MPK”.
There are a variety of tickets available which can be a
little confusing, but luckily there is no distinction between trams and buses
so you can use all the tickets on almost
all the services.
Basic adult tickets cost 2.5 Zloty and are valid for one daytime
journey on a tram or bus, but for each transfer in your journey you will need
another ticket. Night bus single use tickets cost approximately double the rate
of daytime tickets.
If you plan on using the transport network more than once or
twice then better value can be found in the choice of timed tickets allowing
travel and transfers between all trains and buses, these range from a 1 hour
ticket, which is useful if your journey includes a transfer, to the 24, 48 and
72 hour passes. With the exception of the 1 hour ticket these passes can also
be used to access the night bus services.
Tickets can also be bought on board from the driver, while
the vehicle is not moving but this incurs an extra charge, can be difficult to do on a crowded
bus or tram and not all of the drivers speak foreign languages such as English, so
it’s best to buy tickets before travelling.
It is necessary to validate all ticket types upon entering
the first tram or city bus you will be using it on. All trams and buses have
ticket meters, to validate your ticket place it arrow end first into the ticket
meter’s slot, a date stamp will be printed onto it making it valid
It should be noted that not having a validated ticket is as
bad as not having a ticket at all. Plain clothes inspectors with id badges, do operate on the
city’s transport network and are able to impose significant on the spot fines.
